Day 4: ASH WEDNESDAY

The day started early for about half the group. A group of intrepid students braved the early morning bitter chill for a brisk walk to St. Peter's Cathedral for morning mass. After a scintillating wake-up service, they trudged wearily back for an eclectic breakfast to start the day.
The morning's project consisted of the organization of the Little Free Library's book stock. This project lasted several hours in the morning and stimulated the students interest in books by an overexposure to large quantities. After shifting the vast piles of various books, the students felt sufficiently hungry enough to go back to the St. Joseph house and dive into an lunch of assorted and widely varied foods.
Following this invigorating episode, the group as a whole felt it necessary to take a little repose. Sadly, at this time Caroline felt in necessary to retire to her home due to some personal health issues. After drying their tears, the rest of the party regrouped to prepare for Fr. Shane who was kind enough to come for an Ash Wednesday service.
After this time of being shriven, the students and their fearless leader Dave, took some "wellness time" were the cleanliness of the kitchen and of several students were restored.
Towards the end of the afternoon, the faithful remnant of the Our West Bayfront ABST braved a trip in the van driven by newly certified driver; Maddie Rowley. Fortunately, they all arrived at their destination (five blocks away) safely and securely. After surviving a minor dinner price tag scare and rechecking  Maddie's ability to multiply properly, the emotionally exhausted group sat down at a table. Their relief was short lived however, when the student leaders received the shocking news that they had been asked to deliver a short presentation on the nature of the trip. While the anticipation of this sudden opportunity may have ruined the remainder their dinner, they preformed admirably under pressure and even received a light round of polite applause from an appreciative audience.
Dave, the groups spontaneous faculty leader treated everyone to DQ to cap off the dinner. The group then went on a quick tour of the Walnut Creek access and had the first half of their evening reflection.
Once having retired to the St. Joseph House, the group began to wind down by completing an evening reflection part two.

While this may seem like to end of the day, this spunky group had one more spontaneous activity to accomplish. The mission: to welcome Caroline back the following day. The means: a quick run to Walmart and an intense creative session where the house was transformed into a ready party for Caroline's return.
That is where it stands. We will check back in tomorrow for an update on our further adventures.

Day 6 Part 1: Ember and Forge

After a transformative week of service, fostering community relationships and reconnecting with our neighbors, the group wanted to finish off our last full day together by learning more about the businesses that have sprouted in downtown Erie. And what better way to do this other than over some great coffee? The group headed to Ember and Forge located at 401 State Street at 8am to sip on a wide variety of coffee options, to engage in conversation with each other and members of the community and to meet with the brave and wondrous women who started this business, Hannah Kirby. Hannah received her Mechanical Engineering degree from Gannon University and later got her MBA. Upon graduating school, she took on a job at a manufacturing company in Erie, PA for 10 years. However, she knew that there was something missing in her life and she wanted to find something else to to do, to give back to her community in a different way, and have the opportunity to be part of transforming Eri...

Day 1 Sunday, March 3rd

After settling in, the group took a trip up to the Bicentennial Tower. Since today was the first Sunday of the month, it was free! Maddie read a diversity dialogue and then afterwards the group had time to read the plaques and come back together as a group to share one new interesting thing they read about Erie, Pa. It was a great way to start our week by seeing the beauty that our city has to offer! Our main "service project" for day one was helping to serve dinner at Sunday supper! We served dinner and at dinner with people at First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant! Heba and Ashlyn are serving food at the main line!  Tim learns some martial arts from a new friend he met at the Sunday supper!  Heba engages in conversation while sharing a meal with a local neighbor! Caroline, Claire, and Heba show their bright smiles as we begin to serve the meal.  Katie wipes down the tables after the meal while Heba continues her conversatio...
Good evening lovely ABST readers! Thank you for following our journey so far as we rediscover Erie, PA! My name is Kendra Walker. I am a junoir accounting and finance major here at Gannon. Today, I have the honor of relaying the epic journey that we have embarked on. Sleeping in Solidarity  Our day started bright and early with breakfast at our host site the First Presbytrian Church of the Covenant. First off, I have to say even though we are sleeping on air mattresses it is pretty cool to think that we are staying in what looks like some lost European church but that is less than 10 blocks from my apartment. The First Presbytian Church of the Covenant really is an amazing place that I wish that I had spent more time at before this week. I am so honored at how welcoming the community has been to us and the works that they are doing in the community. As Sam had mentioned yesterday we had the opportunity to talk with Pat Tracy Sunday. There she mentioned that the church turns t...
